Choosing A Wine Picnic Backpack

So you have found the perfect location for a romantic picnic, you have organized the perfect food, but what about the wine.  If it is a crisp chilled white wine you are looking for then there is nothing worse than discovering that it is now a lukewarm sickly white wine.  You need the correct equipment for the job, a wine picnic backpack.

Why do you need a wine picnic backpack?  Well, these are practical for several reasons.  Firstly and most obviously you want your wine to be at a drinkable temperature not only when you arrive at the picnic site, but also to be able to maintain that temperature during the picnic, after you have eaten most of the picnic and you are about to enjoy a lazy afternoon is not the time for your white wine to start getting warm!

Another important reason for a wine picnic backpack is that bottles of wine can be quite heavy, even if it does not seem that heavy when you are packing the wine in the kitchen, an extra ten minutes walk in the sun is definitely enough to notice exactly how heavy it is.  By carrying heavy loads on your back you are keeping you hands free, either for other bags or to help your companion … The weight of the bottles in an important reason not to buy a cheap wine picnic backpack.

Unfortunately, you usually get what you pay for and if you have purchased a cheap backpack it is probably made to a lower standard, and wine all over the grass as the straps break or the bottom gives out will not be the best route to a successful picnic.  Also the design of your wine picnic backpack is important.  As with all backpacks the straps should be suitable for the load.

In this instance you will not have that large a load, but you will have a heavy load.  You want the straps to be wide enough to spread the weight and not dig into your shoulders (especially as for a picnic you will hopefully not be wearing thick winter clothing, but hopefully lighter summer attire!)  And the seams have to be strong enough to hold the wine.

It is important for your wine picnic backpack to be the correct size.  If the bag is too big, the wine will not fit snugly into it and will move around.  The problem with this is two fold; firstly you do not want your wine constantly crashing about risking either breaking or in the instance of champagne, fizz beyond control.

But secondly and an important comfort factor, if the wine is moving around in the bag, then the bag will not fit comfortably on your back, as the wine moves inside the bag from one side to the other it will pull on your shoulders and you will be stiff from trying to control your wine picnic backpack by the time you arrive at the chosen picnic spot.

In summary, buy for the purpose and buy quality.  Don’t risk ruining your day out by being ill prepared and remember a good wine picnic backpack is an investment which you will use over and over again.
